Sexual Abuse -Youth at Risk in Manitoba or Canada - 1375 Words

Sexual Abuse -Youth at Risk in Manitoba or Canada (Essay Sample) Content: Sexual abuse-youth at risk in CanadaName:Institution:Course:Tutor:Date:Sexual abuse-youth at risk in CanadaIntroductionSexual abuse is the act of forcing unwanted sexual activities on a victim by the perpetrator (Floric Broyles, 2012). The perpetrator often uses intimidation, force, threats or seduction. This causes the victim to give in without prior consent. In most cases, the perpetrators and the victims know each other, and may even be close family friends or relatives. Over the last few decades, there has been growing overall knowledge about this crime, acceptance and awareness. The crime has become an issue in the society as the victims end up suffering physical and emotional injuries. There are laws that have been created to mandate the reporting sexual abuse cases. A good number of the sexual abuse cases are reported by young adolescents and youths across Canada. These victims come forward with sometimes years of memory repression in regards to the sexual ab use they suffered while they were children, hence making it hard to bring the perpetrators to justice. For this reason, awareness about the crime has to be increased amongst the youths so as to make them conscious about the crime. This paper looks at sexual abuse and how the youths are at risk in Canada.Analysis of sexual abuse in CanadaSexual abuse amongst the youth is well documented in Canada. The crime is not restricted to only girls, but also boys. Using the term sexual abuse would be quite ambiguous, as the act itself is much more complicated than it looks. For instance, using derogatory names, the denial of someone to use contraception after sexual activity, using of unwanted physical force that can cause pain during sexual activity and passing on of sexually transmitted diseases all qualify as sexual abuse. According to some media, adolescence can be part of the reason for the growing cases of sexual abuse (Ney, 2013). This is because this is the age group that is associated with or can easily find selves in practices such as alcohol and drug abuse, which are discussed later. In Canada, the negative behaviors that have been associated with unruly youths have somehow recorded a decrease, thanks to awareness programs and intervention by the parents, teachers and the elderly. Most youths are now finding their education important and are more attached to their families, a move that has helped to reduce sexual abuse cases. In Canada, of every 100 incidents of sexual assault cases, about only 6 are reported to the police or relevant authorities (sexassault.ca, 2014). Only about 2% of date rape, sexual assault cases are reported to the authorities, as a majority of them either shy away or fear to report the cases. This makes it easier for the perpetrators to evade justice, and continue committing the crime. It has also been established that one out of every four women in Canada would have been sexually assaulted in their lifetime, with a majority of these case s taking place when they are still in their youth. 11% of the women who are sexually assaulted end up suffering physical injuries as a result of force that is used by the victims during the crime, while a big percentage end up with emotional injuries, haunting them for the rest of their lives. Although there are many false reports of sexual abuse, it has been calculated that only about 4% of the reports are false, for reasons such as blackmailing or settling grudges (sexassault.com, 2014). In Canada, a staggering 60% of sexual abuse victims were found to be below the age of 17 years, indicating that this is the age group of the most affected victims. Of these, 80% of the cases are reported by women. However, this does not mean that men are not affected or are not supposed to be taken seriously. Some of the men who are victims suffer life-long physical and emotional injuries, while others end up committing suicide. According to the statistical analysis of sexual abuse in Canada by se xassault.ca (2014), it presumed that sexual assault is far more common than it has previously been thought. Also, very few cases are reported to the relevant authorizes and that young and otherwise vulnerable women are most likely to be sexually abused. The reasons that these cases are underreported include personal trauma, fear or re-victimization and whether or not they will be taken seriously. Also, most sexual assaults are committed by people who are known to the victim, while a few are committed by strangers. In the year 2012 alone, there were more than 14000 children and youth sexual assault incidences in Canada (Cotter Beaupre, 2014). This means that for every 100,000 youths, there are about 205 victims. The next highest rate of sexual abuse cases that was reported in Canada in the same year was in the age-group of 18-24 year, whereby about 140 for every 100,000 population was assaulted. The figure below shows the child and youth victims, between 0 to 17 years, of police-rep orted sexual offenses in Canada.Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 1Child Youth victims 2009-2012. Source (Cotter Beaupre, 2014).Risky behaviors amongst the youthOne of the riskiest behaviors that may lead to someone being a victim of sexual assault is alcohol and drug abuse. Drug facilitated assault occurs when alcohol and drugs are used to compromise an individualà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s ability to consent to sexual activity (Floric Boyles, 2012). Alcohol and drugs additionally may be used to minimize the resistance of an individual towards sexual activity, or even in weakening the memory of the victim. Many youths in Canada engage themselves in these risky behaviors. A good number take alcohol, for leisure or for celebrations. Alcohol remains to be the most commonly used chemicals in sexual assault. Others engage in hard drugs, such as cocaine and heroin, which often lead to misjudgment and blackouts. Diminished capacity exists when an individual is not able to consent to sexual activity. The r easons for this include sleeping, passing out drugging and mental incapacitation. This makes them vulnerable to the perpetrators, who take advantage of their toxicity to commit the crime. Many youths have reported to the authorities as being sexually assaulted while they attended a party or went out with friends. The biggest percentage of the youths who are sexually abused after abusing alcohol and drugs are women. However, specification between the outcome measures and drug abuse is found amongst the yout...

In Today’S Society, Abortion Is A Sore Subject, And If

In today’s society, abortion is a sore subject, and if America wants to end the debate on whether or not to let abortion be legal, we need to make some changes. For starters, we would need to change how we educate our youth on sexual encounters and how to go about it safely. Along with new education, we need to make anti-contraceptive devices free and available to the general public. Abortion is the deliberate termination of a pregnancy by removing an unborn fetus. There are many ways to perform this operation, one being the physical removal of the fetus directly from the womb with a vacuum. Another way of having this procedure done is by taking a drug that kills the fetus while still inside. â€Å"Traditionally, many countries outlawed†¦show more content†¦The women who participated in this study were ranged in age from 17-49. This shows us that even though these women had been educated about abortion and contraceptive methods, they still chose to ignore them and no t use them. So, it must be true that our methods of teaching our young are not getting through. According to a different study conducted by Suzan Tusiime, only 12.5% of women used some form of contraceptive when they became pregnant. If you do the math, that means 87.5% of women used no contraceptive at all when they became accidentally pregnant. (Tusiime). Unwanted pregnancy is only one of numerous reasons why people want and receive abortions. Another reason women get abortions is because of rape. The blame on this one is pointed towards the boys. Obviously, we haven’t educated our young males on the direr need for consent. Under this circumstance, women should definitely be allowed to receive an abortion for the pure fact that they are birthing the child of a monster and no one should have to lose sleep over that. There is a multitude of solutions to end this debate. For starters, we could work on providing contraceptives, like male and female condoms, readily available to the public for free or for a cheaper price than what it is currently. One should be able to walk into a store and receive a condom for free. This means supplying our middle schools, high schools, and colleges with free condoms. The Crucible By Arthur Miller - 1094 Words

The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, is a play about the Salem witch hunt trials. Accusations of witchcraft made by townspeople against their neighbors led to confessions, by the accused, in order to save their own lives. As a result, hysteria ensued because the townspeople were suspicious of one another. Miller tried to point out the similarity between the fear during the Salem witch trials and the fear of communism in the 1950’s. John McCarthy, a politician, falsely accused government officials of supporting communism and, as a result, American citizens became afraid that communism was corrupting the US government. Both events were characterized by hysteria. Abigail Williams, a townsperson in The Crucible, contributes to the spread of†¦show more content†¦Ã¢â‚¬Å"Parris: But if you trafficked with spirits in the forest I must know it now, for surely my enemies will, and they will ruin me with it. Abigail: But we never conjured spirits† (1.6). Once again, Abi gail deceives Parris in order to look good. Lastly, in a desperate attempt to save her reputation, she accuses Tituba of forcing her to perform witchcraft, which is dishonest because Abigail willingly participated in it. â€Å" Hale: Why are you concealing? Have you sold yourself to Lucifer? Abigail: I never sold myself! I’m a good girl! I’m a proper girl! Mrs. Putnam enters with Tituba, and instantly Abigail points at Tituba. Abigail: She made me do it! She made Betty do it† (1.29). Abigail blames Tituba in order to cover her own questionable actions. Overall, Abigail’s lies create hysteria, not only in herself, but also in the group of girls that fear being found out. Additionally, Abigail Williams spreads hysteria in order to gain power and leverage over the people of Salem. At first, she threatened her friends. â€Å"Abigail: Now look you. All of you. We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam’s dead sisters. And that is all. And mark this. Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you. And you know I can do it† (1.13). Because Abigail feared being found out, she bluffed when

Six Hours Of Television Essay Example For Students

Six Hours Of Television Essay Six Hours of TelevisionIn looking at modern television programming there are hundreds of showsto choose from. Picking six hours of television to analyze from the prospectiveof an anthropologist is by no means easy. It is easy however, to talk aboutwhat our nation looks like to others who have never been here. Everyone isgorgeous, lives happily, and overcomes all problems, but more on that later. Four hours of the programming I chose is perhaps the most popular programmingthis year, consistently topping the Nielsen ratings. For the remaining twohours of programming I decided to look at two police drama shows, one that wasbrand new this season and one not brand new, but still going strong. For the two hours of police dramas, I looked at programs with differentangles. NYPD BLUE is the story of police detectives, and HIGH INCIDENT was anew show that looked at the view of policing from the beat. HIGH INCIDENTrepresented one of the first t.v. shows to come from the SKG works of StevenSpielberg. However, just like Spielbergs previous AMAZING STORIES, HIGHINCIDENT has already ceased to air. This could still change though, with thenext season. Of the remaining four hours, three are on television everyThursday night, and include the tremendously popular FRIENDS, the SINGLE GUY,the hits SEINFELD and CAROLINE IN THE CITY, and the most popular show this year,ER. For the remaining hour I choose to look at THE TONIGHT SHOW, with Jay Leno. Between these shows there are many similarities and many differences. All ofthese shows can be directly compared with each other, having some of the samequalities. Looking at these shows in the perspective of an anthropologist somedisquieting trends emerge. I will present the information as if an outsider, from another nation, were watching American shows, and believed what he/she wasseeing to be true of what goes on in America. Perhaps more realistic than the other shows, NYPD BLUE, and HIGH INCIDENTrepresent the closest what life is really like. To a foreigner seeing theseshows, they would probably believe that America is a blood bath of crime and illwill towards other people. While this isnt true the whole nation over, thereare many cities like those portrayed in these two shows. Like the other shows Iwill discuss, these two have casts made up of predominately Caucasian males andfemales. Other nationalities, such as Asian, Afro-American, and Latino aresprinkled in just enough to make sure the shows are politically correct. To anoutsider this would show that white males dominate society and life in America. While this is certainly true in some respects, it is unfair to portray it assuch on television. Television influences the minds of too many people to showone class or people dominating over another, even when it isnt obvious toeveryone. NBCs Thursday night line up begins with the block-buster show FRIENDS, andends with the number one show, ER. In between are sandwiched more shows thathave been hits. Every Thursday begins with two hours of comedy. First on thelist is FRIENDS. To an outsider FRIENDS shows the perfect male dominates femalerole of our society. The girls are ditsy, the blond especially so. Of thethree guy friends, only one seems to not have all his brains. Two of the threeguys have steady, secure jobs. For the girls its three steady, but perhapsunsecure jobs, and poor paying. The character Rachel works at a coffee shop andPhoebe drives a cab, not exactly something to build careers on. The guys makemore money, even the character Joey, whos job as an actor isnt steady. Ofcourse each girl is drop-dead gorgeous. To those watching in other countries,America is chalk full of pretty women waiting for a man to come sweep them offtheir feet. The next show, SINGLE GUY, has a slightly different message. .u8286e1b127c8418c469dee263de188d8 , .u8286e1b127c8418c469dee263de188d8 .postImageUrl , .u8286e1b127c8418c469dee263de188d8 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u8286e1b127c8418c469dee263de188d8 , .u8286e1b127c8418c469dee263de188d8:hover , .u8286e1b127c8418c469dee263de188d8:visited , .u8286e1b127c8418c469dee263de188d8:active { border:0!important; } .u8286e1b127c8418c469dee263de188d8 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u8286e1b127c8418c469dee263de188d8 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u8286e1b127c8418c469dee263de188d8:active , .u8286e1b127c8418c469dee263de188d8:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u8286e1b127c8418c469dee263de188d8 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u8286e1b127c8418c469dee263de188d8 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u8286e1b127c8418c469dee263de188d8 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u8286e1b127c8418c469dee263de188d8 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8286e1b127c8418c469dee263de188d8:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u8286e1b127c8418c469dee263de188d8 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u8286e1b127c8418c469dee263de188d8 .u8286e1b127c8418c469dee263de188d8-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u8286e1b127c8418c469dee263de188d8:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Diabetes EssayAmerica is also full of very happy married couples.
